WHAT WE’VE ACHIEVED
In early 2017, we at Semiahmoo First Nation through Se-mi-ah-mu Development Corporation entered into a working construction joint venture with TYBO Contracting Ltd. After a rigorous interview process, our Chief and Council chose TYBO Contracting Ltd. to aid in the enhancement of our reserve lands, an area of land totalling 312 acres.
We are different than most indigenous communities as a result of surrounding developments. Drastic development is resulting in the loss of most of our traditional economic resources. Additionally, our historical food sources have been nearly devastated with salmon and shellfish supply depleting.
This collective endeavour means business opportunities for both TYBO and our Nation: by bringing jobs to our community. TYBO has expressed its excitement in growing a new business and partnership with such a successful and historical group. We with Tybo will continuously be learning and engaging in this new venture, with a different perspective than Tybo’s usual endeavours. Profit is important but is not at the forefront of our objective. We are looking at working with traditions and keeping the our history alive. Each side can take something from the other and continually learn throughout our partnership.
An improved standard of living within the reserve lands will be brought about by supplying new sewage lines and a new water supply, as well as opening doors to economic opportunities outside the Nation's traditional territory.
We chose TYBO Contracting because of their commitment to the local community, employees, safety, tradition, as well as family, which has now expanded to include the 90 members of the Semiahmoo First Nation community. Collectively, TYBO Contracting and the Semiahmoo First Nation are looking forward to further cultivating and nurturing not only our businesses, but also our relationships with one another. Together we hope to bridge the gap between indigenous and local industries, and it is agreed upon that a vital component to a successful future together is mutual respect.
